Artemis Fowl is getting an animated series for Disney Channel and Disney+. Eoin Colfer, author of the books, announced that the project had been greenlit during the “25 Years of Artemis Fowl” panel at New York Comic-Con. He will also serve as an executive producer.

The adaptation will bring the story of the book series, which began in 2001, to animation. Artemis is a 13-year-old genius who discovers an underground world inhabited by fairies who are armed, dangerous and surprisingly technologically advanced. He plots to capture one and steal her magic, hoping to cure his dying mother and save his family.

More than 25 years after introducing the character to readers, Colfer said he was proud and pleased to be part of the team behind the animated series. He also said he trusted those involved to bring the fairy world to the screen.

Ayo Davis, president of Disney Kids & Family, said adapting Artemis Fowl as an animated series would introduce the character to a new generation while serving fans who have followed the books for years. The statement signals Disney’s approach to the adaptation: welcoming viewers who are meeting Artemis for the first time alongside those already familiar with his adventures.

Ben Juwono and Colleen Evanson join Colfer as executive producers. The series has been greenlit, but no premiere date has been announced for Disney Channel or Disney+.
