Backrooms: Um Não-Lugar has officially surpassed US$ 400 million at the worldwide box office. The result makes it the second-highest-grossing horror film of the year, behind only Obsessão, which has earned US$ 500 million.The film grew out of an experimental concept that spread across the internet and gained popularity through Kane Parsons’ videos. The story of the seemingly endless yellow corridors expanded into a mythology embraced by online communities and has now joined the biggest success stories in horror cinema.The production has also become the highest-grossing film in A24’s history. Its performance highlights young audiences’ interest in fictional universes born on YouTube, in video games and in digital communities, as had already happened with Five Nights at Freddy’s.The success has paved the way for a sequel. Kane Parsons has been confirmed as the director of the new film and has reportedly already signed a deal to return. The studio’s official announcement is expected soon.The original story follows a young filmmaker who ends up in another dimension. There, he explores an empty, labyrinthine yellow office that may be home to supernatural beings. The setting was inspired by images from a creepypasta published on 4chan in 2019.The cast of Backrooms: Um Não-Lugar includes Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, Lukita Maxwell and Avan Jogia. James Wan is co-producing the project through Atomic Monster, while Roberto Patino wrote the screenplay. Shawn Levy, Dan Cohen and Dan Levine are also executive producers alongside 21 Laps Entertainment.
