Atlanta premiered on FX on September 6, 2016, and was created by Donald Glover. Its four-season run ended on June 10, 2022. It follows Earn Marks, played by Glover, as he tries to manage the career of his cousin Alfred “Paper Boi” Miles, portrayed by Brian Tyree Henry. Darius, played by Lakeith Stanfield, and Van, played by Zazie Beetz, form the central circle around them.

The series is set primarily in Atlanta, Georgia, and uses the city’s music scene, neighborhoods, and social tensions as concrete parts of its story rather than merely as background.

Earn’s unstable life includes sleeping in storage units and working toward reconnecting with Van, the mother of their daughter Lottie. After discovering that Alfred has gained local attention for rap song “Paper Boi,” Earn begins arranging shows, negotiating opportunities, and attempting to turn informal success into a sustainable career.

Alfred is a drug dealer who adopts the stage name Paper Boi after releasing “Paper Boi,” the song that brings him public attention locally. He negotiates fame while confronting violence, paranoia, exploitative industry figures, and the pressures of providing for family.

Darius is Alfred’s eccentric friend, known for surreal observations, unusual theories, and an ability to treat bizarre situations as ordinary. Across the series, his perspective helps episodes move between comedy, anxiety, and dreamlike uncertainty without abandoning the characters’ everyday relationships.

Van works as a teacher and struggles with co-parenting, financial insecurity, and the changing relationship with Earn. Her storyline gives the show a sustained focus on choices available to a young Black mother in Atlanta, while Beetz’s performance earned her an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.

Atlanta became notable for its shifting format. Some episodes follow the main plot closely, while others function as self-contained stories. “Teddy Perkins,” from season two, centers on Darius visiting a wealthy collector and is filmed largely without the regular ensemble. The episode won an Emmy for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series, awarded to Hiro Murai.

The show’s surreal episodes include “B.A.N.,” which satirizes television news, advertising, and arguments about race through a fictional broadcast, and “Barbershop,” where a simple haircut becomes an extended comic confrontation. Atlanta also received acclaim for its music supervision and cinematography. Donald Glover won the 2017 Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Television Series, Musical or Comedy, and the series won the 2017 Golden Globe for Best Television Series, Musical or Comedy.

Through its conclusion, Atlanta remained centered on Earn, Alfred, Darius, and Van, but expanded into stories about identity, wealth, race, violence, family, and artistic ambition. Its combination of grounded character drama and formally experimental episodes made the series a distinctive record of contemporary Black life in Georgia and a major work of American television history in the modern era.
