The Young and the Restless premiered on CBS on March 26, 1973, created by William J. Bell and Lee Phillip Bell. Set primarily in Genoa City, Wisconsin, the daytime drama initially focused on the wealthy Brooks family and the working-class Foster family. The original central conflict between these households established the show's long-running interest in class, ambition, romance, and family loyalty. Bell later reshaped the series around the Abbotts and Newmans, families whose rivalries have driven many of its most important stories.
A decisive early figure was Katherine Chancellor, played by Jeanne Cooper from 1973 until Cooper's death in 2013. Katherine's turbulent relationship with Jill Foster Abbott became one of the program's defining feuds, involving questions of identity, inheritance, marriage, and motherhood. Jill was first played by Brenda Dickson and later by Jess Walton. Another enduring character, Victor Newman, arrived in 1980, portrayed by Eric Braeden. Victor's marriage to Nikki Reed, played by Melody Thomas Scott, and his business war with Jack Abbott, played for decades by Peter Bergman, form a durable core of the show's mythology.
The show has also used corporate competition to connect personal drama with its setting. Newman Enterprises and Jabot, the Abbott family cosmetics company, repeatedly become battlegrounds for takeovers, betrayals, and succession disputes. The Newman-Abbott conflict expanded through the next generation, including Victor's children Victoria, Nicholas, and Adam, and Jack's relatives and children. These stories have allowed the series to revisit old grudges while giving younger characters distinct struggles over power and belonging. Genoa City itself contains recurring institutions such as Chancellor Industries, the Athletic Club, Crimson Lights coffeehouse, and the Genoa City Police Department, making its fictional community recognizable across decades.
In 1984, The Young and the Restless expanded from thirty minutes to one hour. It became the highest-rated daytime drama in the Nielsen ratings and has won numerous Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Drama Series. Its visual style, music, and emphasis on character-driven conflict helped influence later American soaps, while its success supported a spin-off, The Bold and the Beautiful, which premiered in 1987 and was also created by William J. Bell and Lee Phillip Bell. The show's plots have included corporate takeovers, secret parentage, marriages, divorces, crimes, courtroom battles, and returns from presumed death, but they remain anchored in relationships among its established families. The series continues to air on CBS, with its history reflected in recurring characters and evolving casting.
