Searchlight has officially announced a sequel to The Family Stone, the 2005 Christmas classic, and confirmed the project’s new title: The Families Stone. The film marks the return of Tom Bezucha, who wrote and directed the original.The cast also brings back several familiar faces from the first film. Rachel McAdams returns as Amy Stone, while Sarah Jessica Parker reprises her role as Meredith Morton. The confirmed lineup also includes Claire Danes as Julie Morton, Dermot Mulroney as Everett Stone, Craig T. Nelson as Kelly Stone, Luke Wilson as Ben Stone, Tyrone Giordano as Thad Stone, Elizabeth Reaser as Susannah Stone, Paul Schneider as Brad Stevenson and Brian White as Patrick Thomas.According to the synopsis released by Searchlight, the new story takes place 20 years after the death of the family matriarch. At a Christmas reunion, the Stones must deal with a surprise: their father has unexpectedly invited the woman he has fallen in love with to meet everyone.The project was first revealed by Bezucha in November 2025, shortly after the death of Diane Keaton, who played Sybil Stone in the 2005 film. At the time, the filmmaker spoke about how the character’s absence was already shaping the process of creating the sequel.“I’ve been haunted by the loss of Sybil for months now while I worked on it, and so this was a blow on a tender bruise already. Mentally, I’ve been spending time in that house where I’ve been missing her for a while already.”- Tom BezuchaIn the original film, Meredith Morton accompanies her boyfriend Everett Stone on a Christmas visit to his family, trying to win over his relatives during their annual celebration. The title The Family Stone carries a double meaning: Stone is the surname of Everett’s family and also refers to Sybil’s mother’s wedding ring, a piece Meredith wants to prove she is worthy of receiving.Released in December 2005, The Family Stone opened with US$ 12 million against a production budget of US$ 18 million and ended its theatrical run with US$ 92 million in worldwide box office returns.
