A London jury found Russell Brand guilty of rape and three sexual assaults after a four-week trial at Southwark Crown Court. The actor and comedian, who denied the charges, was denied bail and will remain in custody until sentencing, scheduled for Monday.

The rape conviction concerns a woman who met Brand at one of his performances at the Hammersmith Apollo in 2009. According to evidence presented at trial, she went to his home about a week later. The charge concerned a sexual act that took place after an initially consensual encounter.

The three sexual assault convictions stem from separate incidents. One took place at a bar in Soho in 2004. Another occurred at Capital Radio between 2004 and 2005, while the third involved a colleague in 2009.

The jury acquitted Brand of the other three charges. He was found not guilty of two counts of rape, including one relating to an incident at a Bournemouth hotel in 1999, and of attempted indecent assault stemming from an account of an incident at MTV’s offices in 2001.

During the trial, jurors watched police interviews with the six complainants, whose identities were protected, and heard statements Brand gave to police. Brand also testified, maintaining that he understood the meaning of consent.

Known for roles in films including Forgetting Sarah Marshall and St. Trinian’s, Brand was in court as the verdicts were read. His wife, Laura, attended throughout the trial and testified in his defense. The next step is sentencing.
