The new adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia has revealed the first image of Aslan, the iconic lion created by C.S. Lewis. The character appears on the covers of a new edition dedicated to Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew, the first film in the franchise to be directed by Greta Gerwig.The publication also confirmed that Meryl Streep will voice Aslan. The actress is working with Gerwig again after Little Women, released in 2019.The design differs from the one seen in previous adaptations. Aslan has heterochromia, with one eye of each color, as well as reddish marks on his face. These features reference David Bowie, one of the inspirations Gerwig drew on when creating the character.The musician’s influence is most apparent in the eyes and red markings, elements associated with some of his best-known looks. A second cover, exclusive to subscribers and created by concept artist Jaime Jones, shows Aslan creating Narnia.The scene is directly tied to the story of The Magician’s Nephew, the book that explores the origins of that universe. In the story, Digory Kirke and Polly Plummer travel between different worlds and witness pivotal events, including the birth of Narnia at Aslan’s hands.Gerwig explained that she was looking for a voice capable of conveying authority and depth while also expressing joy. The filmmaker wanted someone over 70 who could convey the wisdom of experience without losing a sense of childlike wonder.Meryl Streep’s casting also marks a departure from the trilogy that began in 2005, in which Liam Neeson voiced Aslan in the original version. The adaptation’s order is another change: Gerwig is starting with The Magician’s Nephew instead of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew hits theaters on 12 February 2027 and premieres on Netflix on 2 April 2027.
