The live-action Naruto film is moving forward, with filming expected to begin between March and June 2027, during the Northern Hemisphere spring. The adaptation is a partnership between Lionsgate and Sony Pictures.

Lionsgate has given the project the green light and will handle production and U.S. distribution. Sony Pictures will handle international distribution. No release date has been announced.

Destin Daniel Cretton will direct the film. Known for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, the filmmaker spoke about his connection to Masashi Kishimoto’s work and what he hopes to bring to the screen.

“As a longtime fan of Naruto, I’ve always loved that beneath all the extraordinary action, there’s a story full of heart, humor and humanity”

- Destin Daniel Cretton

Cretton said the team is committed to preserving what fans love about Naruto while introducing its world to a new generation. His comments offer a sense of the adaptation’s approach, but reveal little about how the story will be told on screen.

The cast remains one of the project’s biggest unknowns: no actors have been officially confirmed. In August, reports emerged that Charles Melton, known for Riverdale and May December, was in talks to play Kakashi Hatake. His involvement remains unconfirmed.

With filming expected to begin in 2027, official cast announcements have yet to come.
