Dolly: A True Original Musical will be staged on Broadway as Dolly Parton wished. The production will begin previews on December 7 at the St. James Theatre in New York and officially open on January 19, 2027—the date that would have marked the singer’s 81st birthday.

The producers confirmed the news while keeping the planned schedule for the biographical musical. The show follows the career of the country and pop music star and features songs written by Parton. The score will include well-known songs from her catalog as well as several new tracks.

The show made its world premiere in Nashville in the summer of 2025 under the title Dolly: An Original Musical. Most of the creative team will remain involved for the New York run: Maria S. Schlatter shares writing duties with Parton, Bartlett Sher remains director, and Mandy Moore continues as choreographer.

Parton, Danny Nozell, Adam Speers of ATG Productions, and Gavin Kalin Productions are producing the show. The musical began as a deeply meaningful project for the singer, who had described her life as a musical and a “grand opera,” and said she wanted to bring the story to Broadway.

Bartlett Sher also spoke about the audience’s connection with the artist during the Nashville run. According to the director, mentioning Dolly’s name made people light up as they recalled moments when she had inspired them or brought them joy. Although Parton has shared fragments of her life over the years, he said the show will allow her to tell her story in her own words.

Previews begin on December 7, with the official opening set for January 19, 2027.
