Chris Carter believes David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson will appear in the reboot of The X-Files led by Ryan Coogler. The series creator said he is “quite sure” the actors will return as Fox Mulder and Dana Scully in Hulu’s new production.

The statement came during promotion for the director’s cut of The X-Files: I Want to Believe. Carter serves as an executive producer on the project, but describes his role as that of a supporter rather than someone responsible for shaping the series creatively. Even so, his comments are the strongest indication yet that the reboot could continue the story of the original series.

The pilot, commissioned by Hulu, was written and directed by Coogler, the filmmaker behind Black Panther and the director of Sinners. The story will follow two decorated but very different FBI agents tasked with reopening the division dedicated to unexplained phenomena. The concept combines standalone “monster of the week” episodes with ongoing conspiracies.

The new leads will be played by Himesh Patel and Danielle Deadwyler, although their characters’ names have not yet been revealed. The series will also have Jennifer Yale as showrunner, a role she will take on after Coogler completed production on the pilot.

Gillian Anderson had already met with Coogler, praised the director as the ideal person to revitalize the franchise and confirmed that she had read the pilot. David Duchovny also acknowledged speaking with the filmmaker and wished the team success, but did not confirm his involvement.

Carter did not reveal how Mulder and Scully might appear. The pair could make a cameo, take on recurring roles or symbolically pass the torch to the new agents. Before beginning the project, Coogler also sought advice from figures connected to the series, including Vince Gilligan, creator of Breaking Bad and a former X-Files writer.
