Maika Monroe

Maika Monroe, born Dillon Monroe Buckley on May 29, 1993, in Santa Barbara, California, is an American actor whose screen career became closely associated with modern independent horror and thriller films. Before acting became her principal profession, she trained seriously in kiteboarding. As a teenager, she relocated to Cabarete in the Dominican Republic, a major kiteboarding destination, and competed professionally. That experience remained part of her public identity even after her acting work accelerated, distinguishing her early biography from the conventional child-performer route. Monroe's breakout year was 2014. In David Robert Mitchell's It Follows, she played Jay Height, a Detroit-area college student pursued by a shape-shifting supernatural entity after a sexual encounter. The film's deliberately ambiguous rules and Jay's sustained vulnerability made the performance central to its tension. That same year, she appeared opposite Dan Stevens in Adam Wingard's The Guest as Anna Peterson, who investigates the unsettling visitor claiming to have served with her deceased brother. The pairing of It Follows and The Guest established Monroe as a notable presence in genre cinema rather than merely a supporting player. Her subsequent filmography moved between studio projects and smaller productions. She portrayed Patricia Whitmore, daughter of former president Thomas Whitmore, in Independence Day: Resurgence (2016), and played Ringer in the adaptation The 5th Wave (2016). In the 2019 crime comedy Villains, she and Bill Skarsgård played inept fugitives Jules and Mickey, who break into a house and discover a captive girl.
