They Follow

“They Follow” is the announced sequel to David Robert Mitchell’s 2014 supernatural horror film “It Follows.” Mitchell is returning as writer and director, while Maika Monroe is set to reprise her role as Jay Height, the protagonist of the first movie. The sequel’s title directly extends the central idea established in “It Follows”: an apparently ordinary person is pursued by a relentless, shape-shifting entity after a curse is sexually transmitted.

“It Follows” premiered at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival during Critics’ Week before receiving a wider theatrical release in 2015. The film became notable for its controlled visual style, electronic score by Disasterpeace, and unusually simple but disturbing premise. Monroe’s performance as Jay, a young Detroit woman trying to understand and survive the curse, helped make the film an important independent horror success. The sequel’s importance rests on the return of Mitchell’s distinctive horror framework. “It Follows” transformed an invisible social rule into a visible, inexorable pursuer, often placing the monster in the background of wide shots and ordinary suburban spaces. “They Follow” is confirmed as a continuation of that film, but details beyond its title, returning personnel, announced cast, and development history should not be treated as established facts until Neon or the filmmakers release further production information.
