The new live-action Street Fighter film released a trailer last Tuesday (1st), revealing more details about the plot and previewing the fighters' return to the big screen.

The franchise began in arcades in 1987, when Capcom released the first game in the series. It centered on battles between fighters from around the world, each with their own techniques, backstories and motivations.

Its success grew with Street Fighter II, released in 1991. The game popularized characters such as Ryu, Ken and Chun-Li, who became pop culture icons, and helped establish fighting games as one of the industry's most popular genres.

With nearly four decades of history, the franchise's games have sold more than 59 million units worldwide. Its film adaptations, however, have had a less successful run. 1994's Street Fighter and 2009's Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li failed to match the games' box office success.

Produced by Legendary and distributed by Paramount Pictures, the new Street Fighter is set for release on October 15, 2026. The trailer offers further insight into the film's plot.
