Spider-Man: Brand New Day has already begun its run in theaters with a historic achievement. Tom Holland's new film as the hero grossed $72 million in preview screenings, including early Wednesday showings, according to Variety.The figure represents the highest preview gross in cinema history. The previous record belonged to Avengers: Endgame, which made $60 million in Thursday screenings before achieving the biggest opening weekend of all time.The comparison, however, also underscores the scale of the challenge facing the new Sony and Marvel production. Endgame opened with $357 million domestically and $1.2 billion globally. For Brand New Day, U.S. opening projections vary: while estimates point to a range between $260 million and $280 million, Sony is working with a more conservative forecast of $190 million to $195 million. There are also analyses placing the result above $300 million.If it reaches the high end of projections, the feature could become the second-biggest opening in history, behind only Avengers: Endgame and surpassing Spider-Man: No Way Home. To date, only nine films have surpassed $200 million in their openings.In the international market, the estimate is for an additional $275 million to $300 million. Its performance could exceed projections, considering that No Way Home opened with $327 million outside the United States and reached $587 million globally.The story of Brand New Day takes place four years after the end of No Way Home, when the entire world forgot that Peter Parker is Spider-Man. Holland's hero is alone, without MJ, played by Zendaya, or Ned, portrayed by Jacob Batalon, as he faces a new and mysterious villain played by Sadie Sink.
