Mike McFarland, a voice actor, ADR director, writer and producer best known for his work on English-language versions of major anime series, has died at the age of 56. He was in a medical care unit in Dallas, United States, surrounded by family and friends.McFarland had been battling glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. His health issues became public in January 2025, when he underwent emergency surgery after a brain tumor was discovered. His glioblastoma diagnosis was revealed in August that year.For many fans, his voice will always be associated with Master Roshi in the Dragon Ball franchise. McFarland began working on the series' dub in the late 1990s and also played Yajirobe in the franchise's series, films and video games over several decades.In One Piece, McFarland voiced Buggy the Clown, the character created by Eiichiro Oda. His credits also include Jean Kirstein in Attack on Titan; Jean Havoc in Fullmetal Alchemist and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood; Koutarou Amon in Tokyo Ghoul; Mashirao Ojiro and Ectoplasm in My Hero Academia; and Carnage Kabuto in One-Punch Man.McFarland's career also made a major impact behind the scenes in anime dubbing. As an ADR director, script adapter and producer, he worked on English-language versions of titles including Attack on Titan, Fullmetal Alchemist, Dragon Ball and the Rebuild of Evangelion films.He was also involved in productions such as Summer Wars and Wolf Children, helping develop adaptations for the North American market.Following confirmation of his death, colleagues and fans began paying tribute on social media. Matthew Mercer, who worked with McFarland on Attack on Titan and One Piece, highlighted the director's importance to his professional career and described him as a close friend.
