Mahershala Ali said he has moved on after the cancellation of Blade, the Marvel Studios project he had been attached to for several years. The two-time Oscar winner addressed the matter while promoting Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother at the Toronto International Film Festival.Ali’s ties to the Marvel film had played out very publicly. He was introduced at San Diego Comic-Con by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, and Feige himself recently cited the cancellation of Blade as one of his biggest regrets. For Ali, the matter appears to be closed.“I have moved on. I’m good.”- Mahershala AliIn an earlier statement, Ali said he was under contract and that the film would have been made if the studio had wanted to move forward with it. The comment underscored the actor’s frustration with how the project was handled, but also showed that he has no intention of dwelling on it: Blade is in the past for Mahershala Ali.Interestingly, part of that process ended up directly influencing his new work. While he was still attached to Blade, Ali met director Bassam Tariq. During that period, the two developed the idea for Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother. The training he did to play the Marvel lead also proved useful for the new film.With a touch of irony, Ali said he was grateful to Marvel because the studio, indirectly, helped finance his current project. According to the actor, he was able to train for a year, and that preparation ultimately contributed to the feature directed by Tariq.In Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, Ali plays a devout assassin who sets out on a revenge mission while caring for his baby. The action film premiered at TIFF to strong reviews and will be released in North American theaters by Amazon MGM later this month.The case also echoes through another recent production: costumes created for Ali’s Blade were reused in Sinners, Ryan Coogler’s Oscar-winning film. As a result, Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother becomes another project to benefit, however indirectly, from the halted development of Blade.
