HBO has announced that Girls will return for five new episodes, with Lena Dunham and several original cast members. The episodes are expected in 2027, though HBO has not announced an exact premiere date.

Dunham, the series’ creator and star, will reprise her role as Hannah. Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke, Zosia Mamet and Andrew Rannells are also confirmed to return as Marnie, Jessa, Shoshanna and Elijah, respectively. Adam Driver, who played Hannah’s boyfriend, has not been confirmed to return.

Dunham said she decided to revisit the characters when she found a story she wanted to tell.

“We always said we would only return to “Girls” if there was a specific story we were dying to tell. I missed these characters, but for a long time I couldn’t imagine them in the present day. Then, around my 40th birthday, they started talking to me in the shower. And, as you may remember, once this quintet starts talking, it’s pretty hard to get them to stop”

Dunham will executive produce the new episodes alongside Judd Apatow, Ilene S. Landress and Michael P. Cohen. Williams, Kirke, Mamet and Rannells will also serve as co-executive producers. Jenni Konner, who was Dunham’s co-showrunner and creative partner on the series, will not return.

The episodes are planned for 2027, which will mark 15 years since Girls premiered and ten years since its sixth season ended. HBO has not yet said when that year viewers can expect to see Hannah and the other characters again.
