Warner Bros. announced Tuesday (29) that “Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest” will hit theaters on June 1, 2029. The film will be directed by Owen Harris and written by Beau Willimon. It will be the first film in the franchise directly inspired by George R.R. Martin’s literary universe.As the title suggests, the story will focus on Aegon I Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros. Aegon was the first king of the Targaryen dynasty to sit on the Iron Throne. The announcement expands on discussions that were already beginning in Hollywood in 2013, two years after HBO’s original series premiered. At the time, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss reportedly presented the network with the possibility of concluding the story with a film trilogy.The series ultimately took a different path and ended in May 2019 after eight seasons. “Game of Thrones” became a worldwide phenomenon, breaking audience records and winning 59 Emmys—a figure that, according to the Television Academy and Guinness World Records, is the most ever earned by a drama series.While the film is still some way off, the universe created by George R.R. Martin remains active at HBO. The network is currently airing “House of the Dragon,” which released its third season this year, and is preparing “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” whose second season is scheduled for 2027. The cast of “Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest” has not yet been announced.
