Jang Seung-jo is a South Korean actor whose career spans musical theatre, television, and film. Born on December 13, 1981, he first built recognition on the stage, performing in Korean productions of Jekyll & Hyde, The Man Who Laughs, and Werther. His theatre background has remained central to his public profile, even as television roles brought him wider audiences. Before becoming a familiar television face, he appeared in musical productions that demand live singing, acting, and sustained character work. That experience distinguishes the route by which he entered screen acting, rather than beginning solely through television casting or film roles. His early screen appearances preceded a major increase in visibility in 2018. In SBS's romance drama Familiar Wife, he played Yoon Joong-hoo, a successful colleague who develops feelings for Seo Woo-jin, portrayed by Han Ji-min. The drama uses a changed-past premise to examine marriage, regret, and alternate choices, and Joong-hoo becomes a significant emotional contrast to the central couple's strained relationship. Later that year, he appeared in tvN's Encounter as Jung Woo-seok, Cha Soo-hyun's former husband. Song Hye-kyo played Soo-hyun, while Park Bo-gum played Kim Jin-hyuk, the younger man whose relationship with her drives the series. The relationship had ended. In 2020, Jang took on one of his best-known television roles in JTBC's crime series The Good Detective. He played detective Oh Ji-hyuk, partnered with veteran detective Kang Do-chang, played by Son Hyun-joo. The series follows investigations that expose institutional pressure and misconduct, while contrasting Ji-hyuk's more reserved manner with Do-chang's experience and local connections. Jang returned as Oh Ji-hyuk for the drama's second season, which aired in 2022. His continuation in the role made the character a durable part of the series, rather than a single-season guest or supporting appearance. The show also gave him a sustained detective role. Jang also joined JTBC's Snowdrop as Lee Kang-moo, an Agency for National Security Planning team leader. Set in 1987, the drama centers on Eun Yeong-ro and Lim Soo-ho amid South Korea's authoritarian political climate. In 2023, he starred in the ENA series Strangers Again as Goo Eun-beom, a divorce lawyer and former husband of Oh Ha-ra, played by Kang So-ra. The series reunites the divorced pair professionally when they work at the same law firm. Beyond acting, Jang married musical actor Lina in 2014. They have two children. His career has continued to move between stage and screen in Korea.
