Brad Pitt is confirmed to star in World War Z 2, a sequel that puts the franchise back among Paramount's priorities 13 years after the first film. Edward Berger, director of All Quiet on the Western Front and Conclave, has been tapped to helm the new installment.Pitt will also produce the film through Plan B alongside Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner. Dennis Kelly, known for Utopia, will write the screenplay. Plot details remain under wraps.The first World War Z opened in theaters in 2013 and grossed more than $540 million at the worldwide box office. At the time, it became the highest-grossing film of Brad Pitt's career as a leading man.In the original story, Pitt plays Gerry Lane, a UN employee who travels through several countries in a race against time. His mission is to find a way to contain a zombie pandemic capable of overwhelming armies and governments, putting humanity at risk.The sequel spent years in development and at one point had David Fincher attached to direct. That earlier version, however, was canceled in 2019, halting plans to bring Gerry Lane back to the big screen.The project will also reunite Brad Pitt and Edward Berger after The Riders, an upcoming thriller that marks their first collaboration. Paramount has not said when World War Z 2 will begin production or announced a release window.
