The Verity adaptation grossed US$ 62.5 million worldwide in its opening weekend. That gave the film the second-biggest global opening among movies based on Colleen Hoover's works, behind only It Ends with Us, which debuted with US$ 95.6 million. In the United States, Verity topped the box office with US$ 32.7 million. The film also added US$ 23.6 million from 43 international markets. The performance is particularly notable given its US$ 40 million production budget. The reception, however, has been mixed. The film currently has a 33% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes and received a C- from CinemaScore, the lowest rating among adaptations of Colleen Hoover's novels. It Ends with Us earned an A-, while Reminders of Him and Regretting You received Bs.Despite its poor audience rating, the result follows a history of commercial success for films in the genre. In 2015, Fifty Shades of Grey received a C+ from CinemaScore and still became a theatrical phenomenon.Directed by Michael Showalter, Verity follows Lowen Ashleigh, a writer on the verge of bankruptcy who accepts a job from Jeremy Crawford. The husband of thriller author Verity Crawford hires Lowen to complete the remaining books in a series his wife is unable to finish after a mysterious accident. At the family's estate, Lowen discovers a secret, unfinished manuscript that could reveal disturbing details about the Crawfords' past. She must determine whether the pages are merely fiction or a warning left by a troubled woman. The cast includes Josh Hartnett, Anne Hathaway, Ismael Cruz Córdova, Brady Wagner, Irina Dvorovenko, K.K. Moggie and Michael Abbott Jr. Nick Antosca wrote the screenplay, which was developed from earlier drafts by Hillary Seitz, Angela LaManna, Will Honley and April Maguire.
