Tim Burton is eyeing a new directing project that could mark a change of pace. Rather than adapt an established property, the filmmaker is expected to work with novelist and screenwriter Kazuo Ishiguro on an original story for the screen.Ishiguro will write the screenplay specifically for Burton. The project is still tentative and remains under wraps, with no title, cast, release date or official plot details. All that is known so far is that the story will probably be set in post-World War II Japan. The collaboration brings together two storytellers whose work often explores life choices and mortality. Ishiguro gained prominence in Hollywood with the adaptation of The Remains of the Day and also wrote the screenplays for Living, The White Countess and The Saddest Music in the World. Films based on his books include Klara and the Sun, A Pale View of Hills and Never Let Me Go.For Burton, the project could take him beyond his gothic and supernatural comfort zone. His recent work has returned to familiar territory with Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and Wednesday, a series set in the world of The Addams Family. Over his career, though, he has also directed original films including Beetlejuice, Frankenweenie, Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, Big Fish and Big Eyes. The filmmaker has previously shown interest in projects that never reached the screen. They include adaptations of the manga Mai, the Psychic Girl, whose rights Burton acquired, and the novel Geek Love, set in a freak show. At various points, he was also attached to direct Cabin Boy, Mary Reilly and Goosebumps. The possible postwar Japan setting has already fueled speculation about a connection to Godzilla, particularly given Burton’s interest in classic kaiju films. So far, however, there is no confirmation that the project has anything to do with the character.
