Martin Scorsese has revealed that the Cleopatra film starring Angelina Jolie was derailed by the crisis that hit Sony in 2014. The project was in development when a hack exposed thousands of internal emails and led to the production being canceled.

Scorsese made the revelation in the first episode of Crafty, an original Tribeca series. He said the project was moving forward until the fallout from The Interview, a Seth Rogen comedy satirizing North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

“We were going to make Cleopatra at one point, and then they made a joke about Kim Jong-un, and he got furious and blew everybody up at Columbia. Seth Rogen, right? And then he got furious and that ruined Cleopatra,” the director said.

Rogen was not identified as directly responsible for the project’s demise. The controversy surrounding The Interview led to the hack, which exposed private conversations among Sony Pictures executives. They included messages from producer Scott Rudin to Amy Pascal, then co-chair of the studio, with offensive comments about Angelina Jolie, describing her as spoiled and untalented.

Scorsese confirmed that Jolie was set to play Cleopatra VII, the last ruler of Egypt’s Ptolemaic dynasty. The filmmaker also recalled the proposal with enthusiasm: “We were going to make it. Angelina Jolie. We were moving forward. She was going to be Cleopatra VII. It was going to be really wild.”

The screenplay was to be written by Eric Roth, who later worked with Scorsese on Killers of the Flower Moon (2023). Despite the involvement of well-known names, the film never made it off the page.

Cleopatra’s story has been adapted for the screen several times. The best-known version remains the 1963 film starring Elizabeth Taylor.
