HBO has indicated that the third season of The Last of Us will be the series’ last. Casey Bloys, the company’s chairman and CEO, said the new episodes are expected to arrive sometime in 2027, but no premiere date has been set.

The comments came after the Emmy ceremony, when Bloys was asked about the future of the Naughty Dog game adaptation. Discussing the show’s conclusion, he pointed to Craig Mazin, co-creator and showrunner, and explained that the current plan treats the third season as the conclusion of the story.

The possibility marks a shift from Mazin’s previous comments, in which he said four seasons would be needed to tell the entire story. Neil Druckmann’s departure from the creative side of the series may also have influenced the decision, although that reason has not been confirmed.

The second season ended before fully adapting the story of The Last of Us Part II. The season concluded Ellie’s part of the story in Seattle, then jumped back three days in time to shift the focus to Abby, played by Kaitlyn Dever.

Bella Ramsey will return as Ellie, while Dever is expected to have a significantly larger role as Abby. The cast also includes Isabela Merced as Dina, Young Mazino as Jesse, Gabriel Luna as Tommy and Jeffrey Wright as Isaac Dixon.

The first season premiered in 2023 and turned The Last of Us into an audience and awards hit for HBO. The series stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey and follows a hardened survivor who takes responsibility for a 14-year-old girl in a world devastated by a global pandemic.

The third season does not yet have an exact release date, but HBO’s current projection keeps the series’ return set for 2027.
