Blade Runner 2049 is now available on Prime Video. The science fiction film directed by Denis Villeneuve and produced by Ridley Scott has found a new home on streaming nearly a decade after its theatrical release, when it underperformed commercially. The sequel to the 1982 classic is set 30 years after the events of the first film. In the story, Officer K, a new blade runner with the Los Angeles Police Department, uncovers a long-buried secret. The revelation could plunge what remains of society into chaos and sends K on a search for Rick Deckard, a former blade runner who has been missing for three decades.Ryan Gosling plays K, while Harrison Ford returns as Deckard. The cast also includes Ana de Armas as Joi, Sylvia Hoeks as Luv, Robin Wright as Lieutenant Joshi, Mackenzie Davis as Mariette, Dave Bautista as Sapper Morton and Jared Leto as Niander Wallace. With an estimated production budget of about US$ 150 million before marketing, Blade Runner 2049 grossed approximately US$ 259 million at the worldwide box office, failing to recoup its investment. The film’s reputation, however, has grown over time: it holds an 88% critics’ approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and has come to be recognized as one of the most acclaimed science fiction films of the century.Ridley Scott summed up its commercial difficulties with a blunt criticism of its pacing: “It’s slow. It’s long. Too long.” The film runs for 164 minutes, a feature that also gives Villeneuve room to develop that dystopian future.Roger Deakins’ cinematography finally earned him his first Oscar, after 13 previous nominations. Now, Blade Runner 2049 is reaching an even wider audience with its arrival on the Prime Video catalog.
