Biggest Changes in One Piece from Netflix and on the Manga and Anime

Having its chapters serialized since July 1997 in the Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine, One Piece is a global success. Recently, Eiichiro Oda's work received an adaptation by Netflix.

Check out some of the main changes that have occurred in the Live-Action compared to its original version.

Garp Appears!

In one of the early scenes of the Live-Action, Monkey D. Garp appears during Gol D. Roger's execution, something that only happens in episode 68 of the anime. In the anime, he doesn't appear during Roger's execution but remembers him when he hears Luffy's laughter.

Garp, appearing from the beginning in the Netflix series, pursues the Straw Hat group from Shells Town to the village of Cocoyasi, which doesn't happen in the original.

Sir Crocodile as a Woman?

During the scene of Gol D. Roger's execution, we can see various characters who were present, such as Shanks, Smoker, and Mihawk. In this scene, we can see that perhaps Sir Crocodile is a woman, referencing an old theory that he had changed his gender through Ivankov, a user of a hormone-based Akuma No Mi, which can change one's body and gender.

The fact is that in the anime, his face is not shown during the execution scene. During the prison break, Ivankov blackmails Sir Crocodile into helping them by threatening to reveal his secret, further reinforcing this theory.

Baroque Works

Instead of appearing many episodes later, as in the anime, the organization led by Sir Crocodile is introduced in the first episode when Zoro faces a member of the organization who tries to recruit him.

Zoro's Introduction

Zoro is introduced in the Live-Action at the grave of his friend Kuina, unlike the anime, where he is introduced in Shells Town. In the Netflix adaptation, Zoro is introduced by fighting Mister Seven, a fight that happens canonically in the anime but was never shown.

Shanks and One Piece

Shanks only goes after the One Piece a thousand chapters later in the manga, while in the adaptation, this happens in the first episode. In the manga, it is mentioned that he is setting out with his crew, but not in search of the pirates' most coveted treasure.

Changes in Shells Town

In this arc, in the Netflix series, Nami already participates in Luffy's fight against the Marines to free Zoro. The young girl who used to bring rice cakes with chocolate to him in the courtyard, as it happens in the manga, in the Live-Action, appears in the bar scene.

In the manga, Zoro frequently names his attacks, while in the adaptation, he criticizes Luffy for naming them.

Buggy and the Map

Luffy is the one who steals the Grand Line map from Captain Morgan, unlike the manga where it is done by Buggy the Clown.

Cobby

Cobby is an important character in this Shells Town arc and has significant appearances at the beginning of the adaptation. However, unlike the anime and manga, there is no fight between him and Luffy in the Live-Action. In the manga/anime, this is the moment when he shouts his dream with all his might, making it a very memorable and touching moment.

In the Netflix series, he simply stays with the Marines and is later interrogated by Garp.

Orange Town

In Orange Town, the battle against Buggy takes place almost exclusively in a circus tent, instead of throughout the town. Buggy's first mate, Mohji, and the little dog Chouchou, who play significant roles in the manga, do not appear in the Netflix series, where only Chouchou appears as an Easter Egg during the episode.

Cabaji and Zoro

Netflix added more depth to the rivalry between Zoro and Cabaji. In the adaptation, Cabaji claims that Zoro killed his brother, something that never happened in the manga or anime. Despite this, the series skips the duel, ending the conflict quickly with Zoro punching Cabaji.

Episodes about Usopp

In the animation, the three boys from Usopp's pirate crew are removed. Arlong is already mentioned in a conversation between Kuroobi and Buggy.

In the manga, Lady Kaya's illness is due to mourning her parents, but in the series, she is slowly poisoned by her butler. Merry is a financial advisor to Lady Kaya, rather than just another butler - and unlike the manga where he is only injured, in the One Piece Netflix adaptation, he is killed.

First Mate

In the Netflix series, Zoro is referred to as the First Mate of Luffy's crew, something that does not happen in the original. This type of nomenclature is only used in the Red-Haired Pirates, with Benn Beckman as the first mate, and in Roger's Pirates, with Silvers Rayleigh holding this position.

Baratie Restaurant

At the Baratie restaurant, Luffy is listed as a helper for not being able to pay his bills, whereas in the original, he is paying for the damage he caused to the restaurant when they arrive.

The battle against Don Krieg is completely removed. Mihawk is sent to rescue Luffy under Garp's command, not as part of his pursuit of Don Krieg.

An iconic scene from the manga is removed: Sanji does not make his reference and gratitude to Zeff and the other crewmates; instead, a simple farewell is given.

Final Episodes of the Series

When Luffy goes to rescue Nami, Arlong's hatred for humans, unlike what happens in the manga, is due to him revealing that the Fish-Men were previously slaves of humans (something that happens much later in the manga). In the original, he simply considers humans physically inferior to Fish-Men.

It's also worth noting that in the adaptation, the villagers of Cocoyasi Village were unaware of Nami's intentions to buy their freedom.
