Top 20 Easter Eggs from the Barbie Movie!

Barbie is already one, if not the biggest phenomenon of 2023 in theaters. A bold, fun, and highly relevant film in its themes and discussions.

In addition to all the accolades mentioned, Barbie hides between one frame and another various Easter Eggs about other famous works of cinema, tourists spots in the United States, and even various products that were a failure for Mattel. Follow now 20 Easter Eggs that we have especially selected for you!

1- Striped Swimsuit

Right in the opening scene, actress Margot Robbie is seen wearing a striped swimsuit. This is a reference to the original 1959 Barbie, which hit the market wearing the same swimsuit, along with the classic white sunglasses.

2- 2001: A Space Odyssey

The beginning of the film makes a direct reference to Stanley Kubrick's work, 2001: A Space Odyssey. This same scene had already been shown in the film's trailers. In Kubrick's film, apes discover the first tool after the appearance of the monolith that marks human evolution, while in Margot Robbie's film, girls discover Barbie and abandon their old dolls.

3- The Matrix

A classic scene from cinema is when Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) offers Neo (Keanu Reeves) the red pill and the blue pill.

The red one would make him see the truth, and with the blue one, he would continue to live in that unreal reality. In one scene in the film, actress Kate McKinnon (who plays Weird Barbie) offers a pink high-heeled shoe or a Birkenstock sandal to the protagonist.

4- The Wizard of Oz in Cinema

7- Mount Rushmore

In another shot, there is also a reference to the famous Mount Rushmore in the United States, featuring the faces of 4 presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln.

In Barbie, the faces are of important dolls from the brand, from left to right: The original 1959 Barbie, The 1968 Christie Original (the first black doll from the brand), The 1981 Oriental Barbie (the first Asian Barbie), and The 1987 California Dream Teresa (the first Latina friend of Barbie).

8- Barbie and the Magic of Pegasus

When Barbie arrives at the beach, you can see a statue of Pegasus in the background, referenced in the animated film: "Barbie and the Magic of Pegasus".

9- Barbie, a Fairy Secret

In a scene that shows Ken, you can see in the background of a building a reference to the movie "Barbie a Fairy Secret". You can easily notice the classic pink and blue dress, as well as the wings of this Barbie.

10- Zack Snyder's Justice League

Something that caught fans off guard was a joke where actress Alexandra Shipp's Barbie wakes up from Ken's hypnosis and says that “it felt like she had awakened from a trance where she was very interested in Zack Snyder's version”.

11- Bratz

When Barbie meets Sasha, she and her friends are dressed and very similar to the discontinued Bratz dolls from Mattel. Sasha also has the same name as one of the most famous Bratz dolls, who goes by the nickname Bunny Boo, just like the girl in the movie.

12- Michelangelo

When Barbie meets her creator, Ruth Handler, for a cup of tea, their hands meet. This is a reference that may have gone unnoticed by many to Michelangelo's work, "The Creation of Adam".

13- Grease

Grease was one of the productions that inspired Greta Gerwig in the development of Barbie. When Ken discovers that the Real World is dominated by patriarchy, there are several references, one of which is a part of the song Greased Lightning, featured in, the film that marked the careers of John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John.

14- Midge

Due to concerns from parents that children might be influenced to have teenage pregnancies, Midge - Barbie's pregnant friend, was one of the dolls discontinued by Mattel. She appears in the movie played by actress Emerald Fennel.

15- Allan

Allan was supposed to be Ken's best friend when he was first released, but he wasn't successful. He only returned after a redesign and married Midge.

In the movie, he is portrayed by actor Michael Cera. Like Midge, as discontinued dolls, there is only one of each in Barbie Land.

16- Ruth Handler

Played by actress Rhea Perlman, Ruth Handler appears in some of the most emotional sequences when she meets Barbie at the Mattel headquarters. She created Barbie as a tribute to her daughter and was one of the company's founders.

17- Skipper

Skipper briefly appears in Barbie in a sequence that takes place in Weird Barbie's house when the group organizes to try to thwart Ken's plans. She caused outrage among parents when she was launched because she had a function: when the child moved her arm, the doll's b00b grew.

18- Tanner

Barbie's companion dog during the 2000s also appears in the movie in Weird Barbie's house. It caused quite a stir at the time because it had various accessories like a poop scooper.

19- Ken, Sugar Daddy

Unlike the current meaning of the term, this Ken had a little dog named Sugar, hence the origin of his name. He wasn't popular and quickly went out of production. Like other discontinued dolls, he appears in the movie in the scene at Weird Barbie's house.

20- Earring Magic Ken

In the same scene as Ken Sugar Daddy, Earring Magic Ken appears, a doll that had an earring and cool clothes to become popular in the 90s. Conservative parents did not approve of the doll's appearance.

When it was released, people associated his attire with the gay men of the early nineties in a very stereotypical and prejudiced way. For this reason, he became known as Gay Ken. In protest, many gay men of the time bought the doll in large numbers, making him the most successful Ken doll model to this day.
