Superman - 5 Hits and 5 Misses of the New Movie!

Released in July 2025, the new Superman movie arrived with high expectations, countless theories, and an immense responsibility: to restore the image of the most iconic comic book hero after years of mixed success on the big screen.

Directed by James Gunn, produced by DC Studios, and distributed by Warner Bros., the film serves as the official starting point for the new DC Universe in theaters. With a refreshed cast and promises to honor the character’s legacy, the movie seeks to balance nostalgia, action, and a fresh take on identity.

But did it succeed? Below, alongside my personal review, we present five strengths and five weaknesses of the movie (with spoilers) that shed light on the strengths and shortcomings of this new take.

The new Superman is accessible even for viewers who are unfamiliar with DC’s extensive universe, showcasing a fantastical tone that stays true to the comic books’ spirit. Unlike previous adaptations, the movie introduces an already-established world filled with heroes and villains, skipping unnecessary exposition and capturing the audience’s attention immediately. This approach makes the movie light, engaging, and easy to follow.

For me, the standout is Lex Luthor, portrayed by Nicholas Hoult. At last, we have a Lex who feels like a true match for Superman. He masterfully exploits the hero’s moral dilemmas, making his schemes not just perilous but emotionally gripping as well. However, his motivations as a villain could have been developed slightly better.

The humor is another highlight. Moments such as Clark Kent’s bumbling antics at the Daily Planet and Guy Gardner’s biting sarcasm deliver hearty laughs. Additionally, Superman’s teamwork with other heroes establishes a rare sense of unity, showing that he is part of a collective force rather than shouldering all the weight himself.

Even though it’s enjoyable, the movie sometimes goes overboard. Krypto, the superdog, is charming, but a few scenes involving him feel forced and unnecessary, pulling attention away from the main narrative. While most comedic elements are well executed, some come off as excessive.

Even with these occasional missteps, especially involving Krypto, the film is an entertaining and uplifting experience. In my view, it’s a solid start for the new DCU.

Strengths

A More Optimistic and Uplifting Tone

One of the greatest achievements of the new Superman movie is its restoration of the character’s inspiring essence. Choosing a hopeful tone without ignoring moral challenges ties the hero back to his classic origins, setting him apart from earlier, darker iterations.

Effective Depiction of Clark Kent

The script does a great job portraying the duality between Superman and Clark Kent, showing a character torn between two worlds in a believable way. The emotional connection to Smallville and his adoptive parents adds heartfelt depth to the story.

A Charismatic Cast

The actor portraying Superman delivers a compelling performance with charisma reminiscent of Christopher Reeve. The supporting cast also contributes greatly to the film’s charm, particularly the new version of Lois Lane, who sidesteps stereotypes and takes an active role in the story.

Smart References and Tributes

The film is packed with nods that fans will appreciate, including the iconic theme music used in key moments, references to Kryptonian heritage, and even an alternate suit inspired by the comics. Everything feels purposeful rather than gratuitous.

Well-Choreographed Action

While action scenes are limited, they are impactful. The balance between destruction and visual clarity avoids the chaos seen in earlier productions. The final battle is both epic and emotionally charged, reaching a satisfying conclusion.

Weaknesses

Uneven Pacing

The movie struggles with pacing issues, particularly in the middle act. Some scenes drag on for too long, while others that could use more development feel rushed. This detracts from the overall flow and immersion.

Inconsistent Visual Effects

Although some visual sequences are outstanding, others fall significantly short of expectations for a major blockbuster. This inconsistency lessens the impact of several critical scenes, especially those involving flight and destruction.

Predictable Plot

While the movie aims for a classic feel, the story ultimately sticks to conventional formulas. With no major surprises or twists, it risks disappointing viewers seeking a fresher narrative.

Underutilized Supporting Characters

Characters like Jimmy Olsen and Perry White receive fleeting introductions with little to no development or narrative relevance. This missed opportunity results in a somewhat less rich storyline.

Lack of Socio-Political Context

Although the movie presents Superman as a symbol of hope, it avoids diving into deeper discussions about his role in today’s world. Without a more defined geopolitical, social, or ethical background, the narrative feels somewhat superficial.

The new Superman movie succeeds in reinstating the character’s inspiring and hopeful essence while paying homage to his legacy. Strong character work, a charismatic cast, and well-executed action sequences mark a positive beginning for what’s to come.

However, uneven pacing and inconsistent visuals hold it back from reaching its full potential. Nonetheless, as the opening chapter of the new DCU, the production provides a strong foundation for future installments.
