The story regarding Lord of the Rings MMO games is long and, unfortunately, a bit disappointing. For some time now, fans of the beloved franchise have been claiming for an MMO game in the Lord of the Rings world, so they could immerse themselves properly in the story. The MMO genre is one of the most sought-after genres for this purpose because it allows the player to completely customize their experience in any given world, and truly "step into" it, which seems like a perfect dream for the Lord of the Rings universe, as complicated and rich as it is.

Many attempts have been made to bring such a game into actual development and release, but for 20 years or so, efforts have been fruitless. MMOs notoriously take a lot of time to be created, developed and released, with one of the biggest MMOs of all time, World of Warcraft, taking 4-5 years to be released. The Lord of the Rings Online, which is still in active development even after 16 years it was released, and the previously announced The Lord of the Rings MMO project by Amazon, canceled back in 2021 after two years in development, are just a few of the MMO projects for the franchise.
Well, it seems Amazon is finally getting another chance at The Lord of the Rings MMO. The first project, canceled in 2021, faced issues with its developer at the time, Leyou, which was bought off by Tencent in the middle of development.
This new adventure for Amazon is reportedly a new project altogether. Amazon's Orange County studio, responsible for the very popular release of New World, in 2021, is the studio behind the project, and representatives have already come out to announce The Lord of the Rings MMO won't be a "New World 2.0". Though they will adapt elements, ideas and technology used in New World, the new Middle-Earth setting will push them in new directions as well. The new game will be based off The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit franchises to offer a "vast, connected digital world".

The studio's last venture, New World, has been in active development ever since its release and its reviews have been going on a downward spiral ever since then. Amazon will have a big challenge ahead if they plan to dodge common online game traps which are abhorred by fans, such as microtransactions. The longest it takes to develop, however, the bigger the expectations are when it finally releases.
