River, the new slasher from Universal Pictures and Blumhouse, hits theaters on January 15, 2027. The film stars Jane Levy, of Evil Dead, and Jessica Rothe, of Happy Death Day.

The story follows three estranged siblings who reunite in their hometown after their father’s death. They travel by boat to a remote location along a river, where they plan to scatter his ashes. When the boat breaks down, the trip becomes a fight for survival.

Lost, without cell service and far from help, the siblings discover they are being pursued by a faceless killer who has emerged from the forest. To survive the night, they must put old grievances aside and face together a threat described as relentless and almost mythical.

River has earned a 91% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics have praised its combination of bloody kills, tension and an inventive take on a well-worn genre. The production has also received acclaim for its visual atmosphere, practical effects and the performances of Jane Levy and Jessica Rothe.

The film was written and directed by Joshua Giuliano, who said he worked on the project for six years. “It’s a labor of love that ultimately became the most rewarding experience of my life,” the filmmaker said while discussing the production and his collaboration with Shudder.

Max Mattern, of Devil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacy, and Dane DiLiegro, of Prey, also round out the cast. Steven Schneider, Nick Antosca and Alex Hedlund are serving as producers.

More information about River is expected to be released soon.
