However, there are better cards with similar effects such as Fatal Push or Abrupt Decay that offer more versatile removal options, making Fungal Infection less likely to see play in competitive Magic: the Gathering decks.

If the target creature is an illegal target by the time Fungal Infection tries to resolve, the spell doesn’t resolve. You won’t create a Saproling token.
