Bleach

Bleach is a Japanese animated television series adapted from Tite Kubo’s manga of the same name. Produced by Studio Pierrot and broadcast in Japan on TV Tokyo, the original anime ran from October 5, 2004, to March 27, 2012, for 366 episodes. Its story begins in Karakura Town, where fifteen-year-old Ichigo Kurosaki can see ghosts. When Soul Reaper Rukia Kuchiki is injured while defending Ichigo’s family from a Hollow, she transfers her powers to him. Ichigo becomes an acting Soul Reaper, guiding souls to the afterlife and fighting hostile Hollows. The premise establishes the series’ spiritual world and combat framework.

Rukia’s transfer is treated as a serious violation of Soul Society law, leading to her arrest and scheduled execution at the Sōkyoku. Ichigo enters Soul Society with classmates Yasutora “Chad” Sado and Uryū Ishida, plus Orihime Inoue, to rescue her. There he confronts members of the Gotei 13, including Byakuya Kuchiki, Rukia’s adopted brother, and Captain Kenpachi Zaraki. The rescue storyline reveals that Captain Sōsuke Aizen has faked his death and manipulated events to obtain the Hōgyoku, a powerful object created by Kisuke Urahara. Aizen later leads the Arrancar, Hollows who gain Soul Reaper-like powers, against Ichigo and Soul Society.

Bleach’s original television run includes anime-original material as well as manga adaptations. Its major canon storylines include the Soul Society, Arrancar, Hueco Mundo, and Fake Karakura Town arcs. The series also depicts Ichigo’s inner Hollow and his connection to Zangetsu, the spirit associated with his sword. After the 2012 finale, the anime returned under the title Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War. This continuation adapts the manga’s final arc, in which the Quincy emperor Yhwach and the Wandenreich attack Soul Society. It premiered in October 2022 and was structured in multiple parts, bringing animated coverage to material omitted by the earlier series.

The original anime was directed initially by Noriyuki Abe, with music composed by Shiro Sagisu. Its Japanese cast includes Masakazu Morita as Ichigo and Fumiko Orikasa as Rukia. The show’s international presence was expanded through licensing and English-language dubbing; Viz Media released it in North America, where it aired on Adult Swim. Bleach became one of the most prominent television adaptations of manga published in Weekly Shonen Jump, alongside its long manga serialization. Its blend of sword battles, named techniques, spiritual factions, and a continuing conflict around Ichigo’s identity gives its episodes a specific narrative foundation, from Rukia’s arrival onward.
