Shinji Ishihira

Shinji Ishihira is a Japanese anime director whose name is especially associated with long-form television adaptations of manga and light novels. He directed the television anime Fairy Tail, adapting Hiro Mashima’s fantasy manga about the wizard guild of the same name. The first TV series began in 2009 and followed Natsu Dragneel, Lucy Heartfilia, Happy, Erza Scarlet, Gray Fullbuster, and their guildmates through the manga’s major guild conflicts. Ishihira remained a central directing credit through Fairy Tail (2014) and the 2018–2019 final series, which brought the animated adaptation to its conclusion. His Fairy Tail work also includes the feature films Fairy Tail the Movie: Phoenix Priestess and Fairy Tail: Dragon Cry. Phoenix Priestess introduced the character Éclair and the Phoenix stone in an original film story, while Dragon Cry centers on the dangerous magical staff sought by the Kingdom of Fiore. These films place Ishihira’s credits beyond the weekly series and within the franchise’s theatrical releases. Ishihira directed Log Horizon, the adaptation of Mamare Touno’s novels in which thousands of players become trapped in the MMORPG Elder Tale. The series concentrates on Shiroe’s effort to build a functioning society in the game world, including the Round Table Conference in Akiba, rather than treating the setting solely as an escape narrative. Ishihira directed Log Horizon’s first television season, broadcast from 2013 to 2014, and its second season, broadcast from 2014 to 2015. Earlier in his directing career, Ishihira directed Air Gear, an anime based on Oh! great’s manga about Itsuki “Ikki” Minami and the motorized inline skates called Air Trecks. He also directed Tokyo Majin, whose students confront supernatural threats in modern Tokyo. His television directing credits further include Super Lovers, based on Miyuki Abe’s manga, and Sasaki and Miyano, a school romance adapted from Shou Harusono’s manga. Across these projects, Ishihira has worked with properties that arrived in markedly different formats: Mashima’s expansive battle-fantasy serial, Touno’s game-world political fantasy, Oh! great’s action manga, and character-focused romance manga. The record is specific: Fairy Tail and Log Horizon account for his best-known extended television assignments, while Air Gear, Tokyo Majin, Super Lovers, and Sasaki and Miyano show the range of titles on which he has held the director’s role. He has also been credited as chief director on the 2021 television anime Edens Zero, another Hiro Mashima adaptation. Edens Zero follows Shiki, Rebecca, and companions traveling through space in search of Mother.
