Michael Shackleford

Shackleford was an American Thoroughbred racehorse best known for winning the 2011 Preakness Stakes and the 2012 Metropolitan Handicap. A chestnut colt foaled on February 25, 2008, he was by Forestry, a son of Storm Cat, out of the Unbridled mare Oatsee. Oatsee was an especially productive broodmare: her other notable offspring included the Grade I winners Lady Joanne and Afleet Alex. Shackleford raced for owner Mike Lauffer and was trained by Dale Romans.

His three-year-old campaign put him on the 2011 Triple Crown trail. In the Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park, Shackleford set the pace and finished second to Dialed In, earning enough points and attention for a Kentucky Derby start. At Churchill Downs he again raced prominently and came home fourth behind Animal Kingdom, Nehro, and Mucho Macho Man. Two weeks later, Romans sent him to Pimlico for the Preakness. With Jesus Castanon riding, Shackleford took the lead, controlled the race, and resisted Animal Kingdom’s late challenge to win by one-half length. Astrology was third.

The Preakness was the centerpiece of a demanding season in which he also ran in the Belmont Stakes, Haskell Invitational, and Travers Stakes. His results did not always match his best front-running performances, but Romans kept him in major Grade I company.

At four, Shackleford recorded another defining victory in the Metropolitan Handicap, the historic one-mile Grade I at Belmont Park. Under Cornelio Velasquez, he led throughout and beat Caleb’s Posse, the 2011 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile winner. Earlier in 2012 he had captured the Grade II Gulfstream Park Handicap and the Grade II Churchill Downs Stakes, reinforcing the value of his speed over a mile and a mile-sixteenth.

Shackleford made 20 starts, compiling six wins, four seconds, and three thirds, and earned $3,090,101. His distinctive white blaze and aggressive pace-making style made him a recognizable presence in major American races. He was retired after the 2012 season and entered stud at Darby Dan Farm in Kentucky. The Preakness trophy, however, remains the clearest measure of his racing legacy: he carried his speed from the opening stages to the finish against a Kentucky Derby winner and secured one of U.S. racing’s classic events. His career connected two highly competitive seasons: a classic win at three and a celebrated mile victory at four. Those wins, rather than a single isolated result, define Shackleford’s record. He remained a prominent son of Forestry.
