Kim Mu-yeol

Kim Mu-yeol, born May 22, 1982, is a South Korean actor whose work has moved between theatre, film, television, and streaming drama. He studied acting at Sungkyunkwan University and developed an early reputation on the stage before becoming widely visible in screen projects. His theatre background remains an important part of his career: he has appeared in Korean productions of musicals and plays, rather than entering the industry solely through television casting. His film breakthrough came with Kim Han-min’s 2011 historical action film War of the Arrows. Kim played Seo-goon, Ja-in’s bridegroom, one of the wedding party captured by Qing invaders. The film, led by Park Hae-il and Moon Chae-won, became a major domestic hit and brought Kim broader recognition. In Jung Ji-woo’s 2012 drama A Muse, adapted from Park Bum-shin’s novel, he played Seo Ji-woo, the ambitious young poet who becomes entangled with an elderly poet and the teenage girl inspiring him. Kim continued to take sharply contrasting roles. In the 2017 mystery thriller Forgotten, directed by Jang Hang-jun, he played Yoo Seok, the apparently returned elder brother whose changed behavior drives Kang Ha-neul’s character to question what happened during a kidnapping. He played in The Spy Gone North, Yoon Jong-bin’s 2018 espionage drama inspired by Park Chae-seo’s real undercover operation in the 1990s. The film follows a South Korean businessman recruited by intelligence; Kim’s role is a North Korean official. In 2022, he appeared in Netflix’s Narco-Saints as Choi Chang-ho, a National Intelligence Service agent who recruits an ordinary entrepreneur for a dangerous mission against a Korean drug lord operating in Suriname. He portrayed Joo Sung-chul, the brutal chief executive of a construction company, in the 2023 crime film The Roundup: No Way Out. The installment of The Roundup series paired him against Ma Dong-seok’s detective Ma Seok-do and became another major Korean box-office success. Kim also joined Netflix’s post-apocalyptic series Sweet Home in its second season, playing Kim Young-su, a former soldier associated with the survivors’ security structure, and returned for third season. Outside of acting, Kim married actor Yoon Seung-ah in April 2015. The couple had announced their relationship publicly in 2012, then held a private wedding in Seoul. His selected credits show a pattern of choosing ensemble thrillers, historical spectacle, character-driven drama, and high-profile franchise films, while retaining a connection to live performance through stage work across his long professional life.
