Edit reference

Jennifer Lee is a screenwriter and director whose work helped reshape Walt Disney Animation Studios in the 2010s. She co-wrote the screenplay for *Wreck-It Ralph* (2012), an animated film about an arcade-game villain who wants to become a hero. The following year, she and Chris Buck directed *Frozen*, with Lee also writing its screenplay. Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Snow Queen,” the film centers on sisters Anna and Elsa and the consequences of Elsa’s power to create ice. Lee became the first woman to direct a feature-length film for Walt Disney Animation Studios.

*Frozen* won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, while “Let It Go,” written by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, won Best Original Song. The film’s commercial success was extraordinary, but its treatment of the sisters’ relationship was just as consequential to its identity: the story’s decisive act of love comes from Anna, rather than a romantic partner. Lee and Buck returned to direct *Frozen II* (2019), which follows Elsa and Anna beyond Arendelle to investigate the source of Elsa’s powers and their family’s history. Lee wrote the sequel’s screenplay.

Lee’s career has also extended beyond the *Frozen* films. She wrote the screenplay for Disney’s live-action *A Wrinkle in Time* (2018), directed by Ava DuVernay and adapted from Madeleine L’Engle’s novel. Later, Lee co-wrote the screenplay for *Wish* (2023), Disney’s animated musical about Asha, a young woman who challenges the ruler of a kingdom that holds its citizens’ wishes. These projects placed her in markedly different storytelling traditions: a literary science-fiction adaptation and a musical built around Disney’s own history.

In 2018, Lee was named chief creative officer of Walt Disney Animation Studios, succeeding John Lasseter. In that role, she helped oversee the studio’s animated-film slate while continuing her creative work. Disney announced in 2024 that Jared Bush would succeed her as chief creative officer and that Lee would return her attention to writing and directing future *Frozen* films. Her path from *Wreck-It Ralph* screenwriter to studio creative chief is unusually well documented through films with distinct credits and release dates. It also shows how closely her career became tied to Anna and Elsa: Lee wrote and co-directed the original film, returned for its sequel, and chose to focus on the franchise again after leading the studio. Those specific contributions, rather than the franchise’s popularity alone, define her place in Disney animation.
