Edit reference

Greg Peters is an American business executive who became co-chief executive officer of Netflix in January 2023, sharing leadership of the streaming company with Ted Sarandos. His appointment accompanied a major leadership transition: Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings stepped down as co-chief executive and became executive chairman. Peters had previously served as Netflix's chief operating officer and chief product officer, giving him responsibility across the company's technology, product development, and operational activities. Unlike Sarandos, whose career at Netflix has centered on programming and entertainment, Peters rose through roles concerned with how the service works, reaches subscribers, and expands into new markets.

Peters joined Netflix in 2008, initially working on international development. One particularly concrete part of that work was Japan, where Netflix launched its streaming service in September 2015. He served as managing director of Netflix Japan, a position that connected the company's global expansion strategy with a distinctive local entertainment market. Peters speaks Japanese, an unusual and relevant qualification for that assignment. In July 2017, Netflix named him chief product officer, succeeding Neil Hunt. In July 2020, the company added the chief operating officer title to his responsibilities, while he continued to oversee product decisions for its worldwide subscriber base.

His executive tenure has included several substantial changes to Netflix's business model. Netflix introduced an advertising-supported subscription plan in November 2022, reversing its longstanding reliance on subscriptions without advertising. Microsoft was selected as the initial technology and sales partner for that offering. Peters discussed the advertising initiative publicly as part of Netflix's leadership team. Another change was the introduction of paid sharing, designed to convert some viewers using accounts outside their households into paying customers. Netflix expanded that policy widely in 2023, during his first year as co-chief executive, making subscription pricing and account access central issues under his leadership.

Peters also became closely associated with Netflix's move into video games. The company began offering mobile games to subscribers in November 2021, with access included in membership rather than sold through separate game subscriptions. This expansion placed interactive entertainment alongside Netflix's established film and television offering. Before joining Netflix, Peters worked at Macrovision, where he was senior vice president of consumer electronics products. Netflix's initial mobile lineup included Stranger Things: 1984 and another adaptation, Stranger Things 3: The Game. He holds a degree in physics and astronomy from Yale University, providing a technical academic foundation for his subsequent corporate career.
