DreamWorks Animation

DreamWorks Animation is an American animation studio created in 1994 by Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg, and David Geffen as part of DreamWorks SKG. Its first feature, Antz, reached theaters in 1998, placing the studio in direct competition with Pixar’s A Bug’s Life that same year. Katzenberg, formerly chairman of Walt Disney Studios, became the company’s central animation executive. DreamWorks Animation built its early identity around computer-animated features that often mixed fairy tales, pop-culture jokes, celebrity voices, and comic reversals. The studio’s Pacific Data Images unit, acquired in 2000, supplied important computer-animation expertise and later worked under the DreamWorks Animation name. The decisive commercial breakthrough was Shrek, released in 2001. Directed by Andrew Adamson and Vicky Jenson, the film adapted characters from William Steig’s book and won the first Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Mike Myers voiced the ogre Shrek, Eddie Murphy played Donkey, and Cameron Diaz played Princess Fiona. Shrek 2, released in 2004, became a major box-office success and helped establish a franchise that expanded through sequels, television specials, short films, theme-park attractions, and the Puss in Boots spin-offs. The studio later returned to that world with Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, whose visual design earned attention. Beyond Shrek, DreamWorks Animation developed several series. Madagascar began in 2005 and followed a group of Central Park Zoo animals, including Alex the lion, Marty the zebra, Melman the giraffe, and Gloria the hippopotamus, after they reached Madagascar. Kung Fu Panda premiered in 2008, starring Jack Black as Po, an unlikely panda chosen to become the Dragon Warrior. How to Train Your Dragon, released in 2010 and based on Cressida Cowell’s books, centered on Hiccup and the dragon Toothless; it produced two feature sequels. Also were The Croods, Trolls, The Boss Baby, and The Prince of Egypt, a 1998 musical. DreamWorks Animation became a publicly traded company in 2004, separating from the broader DreamWorks operation. In 2016, NBCUniversal, a Comcast subsidiary, acquired the studio for about $3.8 billion; it subsequently operated within Universal Filmed Entertainment Group. The company’s output has continued to combine franchise installments with original projects. The Bad Guys, released in 2022, adapted Aaron Blabey’s children’s books. The Wild Robot, released in 2024, adapted Peter Brown’s novel and was written and directed by Chris Sanders. Across its history, DreamWorks Animation has received Academy Award recognition, while Shrek remains its defining success and a landmark in mainstream computer animation.
