Carrie Coon is an American actor whose work spans Chicago theater, prestige television, and films ranging from intimate family dramas to major studio franchises. Raised in Copley, Ohio, she studied at the University of Mount Union and earned a Master of Fine Arts at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Her breakthrough onstage came as Honey in the Steppenwolf Theatre Company production of Edward Albee's Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, which transferred to Broadway and brought her a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Play in 2013. Her husband is playwright and actor Tracy Letts, who played George in that production.
On HBO's The Leftovers, Coon played Nora Durst, whose husband and children disappear in the unexplained event known as the Sudden Departure. Across the show's three seasons, Nora's grief, skepticism, and search for answers became central to its exploration of loss; Coon's performance won a Critics' Choice Television Award for the role. In David Fincher's 2014 film Gone Girl, she played Margo Dunne, the twin sister of Ben Affleck's Nick Dunne, helping anchor the story outside the media spectacle surrounding the disappearance of Nick's wife, Amy. These two roles introduced her to a much wider screen audience.
In the third season of Fargo, Coon portrayed Gloria Burgle, a Minnesota police chief investigating a murder case that leads into the rivalry between brothers Emmit and Ray Stussy, both played by Ewan McGregor. Her work on the 2017 season earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie. She later took on the role of Bertha Russell in HBO's The Gilded Age, a drama set amid the social hierarchies of nineteenth-century New York. Bertha and her husband George, played by Morgan Spector, seek entry into a society controlled by established families.
Coon played Alison O'Hara opposite Jude Law in Sean Durkin's The Nest, depicting a marriage strained by a move from America to England and her husband's risky financial ambitions. In Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, she portrayed Callie Spengler, daughter of original Ghostbuster Egon Spengler and mother to Phoebe and Trevor. She also portrayed Katie in His Three Daughters, alongside Natasha Lyonne and Elizabeth Olsen, as three sisters gather during their father's final days. In the third season of The White Lotus, set in Thailand, she played Laurie, one of three friends vacationing together; Michelle Monaghan and Leslie Bibb played the two women.
