Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter was born on September 4, 1981, in Houston, Texas. She rose to prominence in the late 1990s in Destiny’s Child, alongside Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams. The trio scored hits including “Say My Name,” “Survivor,” and “Bootylicious.” Beyoncé’s father, Mathew Knowles, managed the group, while her mother, Tina Knowles, designed its costumes. Destiny’s Child’s 2001 album Survivor debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. After the group paused for solo projects, Beyoncé released Dangerously in Love in 2003. Its singles “Crazy in Love,” featuring Jay-Z, and “Baby Boy,” featuring Sean Paul, both topped the Billboard Hot 100.

At the 2004 Grammy Awards, Dangerously in Love earned her five wins, including Best Contemporary R&B Album. She reunited with Destiny’s Child for Destiny Fulfilled in 2004; the group announced its separation in 2005. Beyoncé’s album B’Day arrived on her twenty-fifth birthday in 2006 and included “Irreplaceable.” She played Deena Jones in the 2006 film Dreamgirls. Her 2008 album I Am... Sasha Fierce introduced “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” with its black-and-white dance video. Beyoncé married Jay-Z in 2008. They have three children: Blue Ivy, born in 2012, and twins Rumi and Sir, born in 2017.

In 2013, she released the self-titled Beyoncé unannounced, pairing every song with a video. Its tracks included “Drunk in Love” and “Partition.” Lemonade followed in 2016 as a full-length visual album broadcast on HBO, exploring infidelity, family, Black womanhood, and reconciliation through songs such as “Formation” and “Freedom.” She headlined the 2018 Coachella festival with a performance honoring historically Black colleges and universities, with marching band, step dancers, and a Destiny’s Child reunion. The concert became the Netflix film and live album Homecoming. In 2019, she voiced Nala in Disney’s remake of The Lion King and curated The Lion King: The Gift.

Her 2022 album Renaissance drew on house, disco, and ballroom traditions; its lead single, “Break My Soul,” reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. The Renaissance World Tour ran in 2023 and was documented in a concert film. In 2024, Cowboy Carter explored country music and Black roots, featuring “Texas Hold ’Em,” a cover of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene,” and contributions from Linda Martell. “Texas Hold ’Em” made Beyoncé the first Black woman to top Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart. In 2025, Cowboy Carter won the Grammy for Album of the Year, her first, as well as Best Country Album.
