Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is an upcoming animated superhero film from Sony Pictures Animation. A sequel to Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, it continues the story of Miles Morales.

Edit reference

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is the third feature in Sony Pictures Animation’s animated Spider-Verse series, following Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023). Its central character is Miles Morales, the Brooklyn teenager whose encounters with alternate realities connect him to other people carrying the Spider-Man identity. The film was announced before its predecessor reached cinemas, reflecting the decision to expand the planned sequel into two separate features rather than conclude the continuing story in one film.

In April 2022, Sony announced the title Beyond the Spider-Verse at CinemaCon. Previously, the two sequels had been identified as parts of Across the Spider-Verse. Beyond was initially scheduled for theatrical release on March 29, 2024. However, Sony removed it from that release date in July 2023 amid the Hollywood actors’ strike. That scheduling history matters because the original date was an announced plan, not evidence that the film had been completed or that its story was already publicly available.

The verified narrative context comes from Across the Spider-Verse’s ending. Miles discovers that he has been sent to Earth-42, not his own Earth-1610. On Earth-42, his father is dead, his uncle Aaron is alive, and his counterpart has become the Prowler. Meanwhile, Gwen Stacy assembles allies to find Miles. These are established events in the preceding film, not a confirmed synopsis of Beyond. They leave the trilogy’s protagonist facing an alternate version of himself while his friends organize a rescue.

Another unresolved conflict concerns Miguel O’Hara’s insistence that certain tragedies are necessary “canon events” for Spider-People. Miles rejects the idea that he must allow his father to die to preserve the multiverse. The Spot also remains a major threat after gaining greater power in Across the Spider-Verse. Beyond’s position as the concluding installment connects it to these specific unfinished storylines, although their resolutions should not be presented as established facts before the filmmakers disclose them or audiences see the film.

In December 2024, Sony announced Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson as Beyond’s directors. Persichetti previously co-directed Into the Spider-Verse, while Thompson co-directed Across the Spider-Verse and served as production designer on the first film. Their involvement gives the third installment a direct creative connection to both predecessors. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are also central returning filmmakers. The project’s documented identity is therefore unusually specific: a trilogy finale built around Miles Morales and the consequences of crossing parallel worlds.
