Lady Death is a comic-book character created by writer Brian Pulido and artist Steven Hughes. She debuted in Evil Ernie #1, published by Eternity Comics in 1991, before becoming the title character of her own comics under Pulido's Chaos! Comics imprint. Her earliest appearances tied her to Evil Ernie, another Pulido creation, but her solo stories established a separate supernatural mythology. The character's appearance, with white hair, pale skin, and a revealing white costume, became a recognizable emblem of 1990s horror comics. Hughes's artwork was central to that early identity; he illustrated Lady Death stories before his death in 2000.
In the original Chaos! Comics continuity, she begins as Hope, the daughter of Matthias, a medieval nobleman whose crimes bring an angry crowd to their home. Facing execution, Hope invokes a spell that carries her into Hell. There she becomes entangled with Lucifer, who prevents her from returning to Earth while living humans remain. Rather than accept captivity, she resolves to destroy humanity and thereby defeat the condition of his curse. Her transformation into Lady Death turns a threatened human girl into a ruler in Hell's power struggles. This origin is specific to the original continuity; later publishers have reworked her history.
Chaos! Comics released numerous Lady Death miniseries and specials, making her one of its signature properties alongside Evil Ernie and Purgatori. After Chaos! Comics collapsed in 2002, the character did not disappear. Avatar Press published new Lady Death material, including stories that revised her origin and departed from Chaos! continuity. The rights and publication history matter because Lady Death is not a single uninterrupted narrative: different comic lines present different accounts of Hope, Hell, and her adversaries. Pulido later brought the character to Coffin Comics, where crowdfunding campaigns supported new comics and collector-oriented editions.
Lady Death also crossed into animation. The animated film Lady Death, released in 2004, adapts her descent into Hell and conflict with Lucifer, though its story should not be mistaken for a precise retelling of every comic. Her career therefore spans an early appearance as a supporting figure in Evil Ernie, a long run of self-titled horror-fantasy comics, and an animated adaptation. The repeated reinventions have not erased her central premise: Hope's encounter with Hell transforms her into Lady Death. That combination of a named human origin, a supernatural rebellion, and a distinctly 1990s comics aesthetic distinguishes her from a generic personification of death.
