Apu Nahasapeemapetilon is the proprietor of the Kwik-E-Mart convenience store in Springfield, the fictional town at the center of the animated series *The Simpsons*. He was introduced in the first season episode "The Telltale Head" (1990) and became a recurring character voiced by Hank Azaria. Apu is an Indian immigrant who holds a Ph.D. in computer science, a detail established in the episode "Much Apu About Nothing" (1996), where it is revealed he earned his doctorate before moving to the United States. Despite his advanced education, he works long hours behind the counter of the Kwik-E-Mart, a job he approaches with a mix of diligence and weary resignation.
Apu's characterization centers on his role as a small-business owner in a town that frequently tests his patience. He is known for his catchphrase "Thank you, come again," delivered in a distinctive singsong accent. His store is a recurring setting for gags about expired food, inflated prices, and the hazards of convenience-store life; he has been shot multiple times in the line of duty, most memorably in "Homer's Triple Bypass" (1992). In "The Springfield Files" (1997), he faces deportation after an immigration raid, and in "Much Apu About Nothing," he obtains a fraudulent Social Security card before ultimately passing his citizenship test.
Apu's personal life expanded significantly in the episode "The Two Mrs. Nahasapeemapetilons" (1997), which arranged his marriage to Manjula, and later "I'm with Cupid" (1999), which depicted their married life and the birth of their octuplets in "Eight Misbehavin'" (1999). These episodes moved him from a background fixture to a character with a family and domestic storylines. The character has also drawn criticism for relying on stereotype, a debate that became prominent in the 2018 documentary *The Problem with Apu*, prompting the show to address his portrayal in later seasons. Across more than three decades, Apu remains one of *The Simpsons*' most recognizable supporting characters, defined by his work ethic, his store, and the cultural conversations his presence provoked.
