A deck that focuses on landfall triggers or land recursion would benefit from using Khalni Gem, as it allows for additional landfall triggers and can help with replaying lands for their effects. However, there are better options like Lotus Cobra or Azusa, Lost but Seeking that provide more consistent mana ramp without the drawback of returning lands to hand, making them more desirable choices for competitive play. Khalni Gem could see play in more casual or thematic decks that specifically benefit from its unique effect.

If you don’t control any lands by the time Khalni Gem’s triggered ability resolves, nothing happens. If you control just one, you’ll have to return it to its owner’s hand. Khalni Gem isn’t affected in either case.
