Bob Mackie, the fashion and costume designer behind some of pop culture’s most iconic looks, died on Monday (14) at the age of 87 in Palm Springs, California.Over a career spanning more than five decades, Mackie dressed artists including Tina Turner, Diana Ross, Elton John, Liza Minnelli, Madonna and Miley Cyrus. His longest and most celebrated collaboration, however, was with Cher, beginning when the singer was still taking her first steps in television.Together, they helped create an image that became inseparable from the artist’s career. Among Mackie’s designs for Cher was the sheer crystal- and feather-embellished gown she wore to the 1974 Met Gala, considered one of the forerunners of the so-called naked dress.Another historic look was the enormous feathered headdress paired with a black, jewel-encrusted outfit Cher wore to the 1986 Oscars. Two years later, the singer won the Academy Award for Best Actress for Moonstruck wearing another of the designer’s creations.Mackie also designed Cher’s costume for “If I Could Turn Back Time” and revisited the partnership in The Cher Show, the Broadway musical about the singer’s life. The work earned him the Tony Award for Best Costume Design in a Musical in 2019.Bob Mackie’s name was also linked to Marilyn Monroe’s history: he was responsible for the sketch of the dress the actress wore while singing “Happy Birthday” to John F. Kennedy. Over the course of his career, he earned nine Emmys and three Academy Award nominations.Decades after his earliest creations, his influence remained visible in artists such as Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift, Sabrina Carpenter and Miley Cyrus.
