Charlie Cox

Charlie Cox is an English actor born in London on 15 December 1982. He trained at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School after attending Sherborne School in Dorset. Early screen appearances included the 2004 period romance The Merchant of Venice, in which he played Lorenzo opposite Al Pacino’s Shylock. In 2007, Cox portrayed Tristan Thorn in Stardust, Matthew Vaughn’s fantasy film adapted from Neil Gaiman’s novel. Tristan’s journey begins with a promise to retrieve a fallen star for Victoria Forester, but leads him to Yvaine, played by Claire Danes, and a struggle over the throne of Stormhold. Its cast included Michelle Pfeiffer.

On television, Cox gained a major American audience as Owen Sleater in HBO’s Boardwalk Empire. He joined the Prohibition-era drama in its second season and played the young Irish enforcer connected to the D’Alessio brothers and Jimmy Darmody’s past. His character becomes entangled with the political and criminal conflict surrounding Enoch “Nucky” Thompson, portrayed by Steve Buscemi. Cox later took the lead in Netflix’s Daredevil as Matt Murdock, a blind Hell’s Kitchen lawyer who secretly operates as a masked vigilante. The series ran for three seasons from 2015 to 2018 and established Murdock’s fraught alliances with Foggy Nelson and Karen.

Cox also appeared as Murdock in the crossover miniseries The Defenders, alongside Krysten Ritter, Mike Colter, and Finn Jones. In 2021, Cox made his first Marvel Cinematic Universe film appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home, when Peter Parker seeks legal advice from Murdock. He returned in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, portraying Murdock opposite Tatiana Maslany’s Jennifer Walters. In 2024, he reprised the role in the Disney+ series Echo. on Matt Murdock and Fisk. Outside Marvel, Cox played Jonathan Hellyer Jones in the 2014 biographical drama The Theory of Everything, which depicted physicist Stephen Hawking’s relationship with Jane Hawking. His stage work includes Harold Pinter’s Betrayal, a production that transferred to Broadway in 2019. Cox played Jerry, opposite Tom Hiddleston as Robert and Zawe Ashton as Emma. In Netflix’s 2022 spy thriller Treason, Cox starred as Adam Lawrence, an MI6 officer whose past with Russian agent Kara Yusova, played by Olga Kurylenko, threatens his position and family. The drama was created by Matt Charman, who wrote Bridge of Spies.
