Frieza

Frieza is a mutant alien from Dragon Ball whose appearance and history are established in Akira Toriyama’s manga and its anime adaptations. He rules a spacefaring empire through fear, commanding soldiers and conquering planets for profit rather than serving a recognized government. His first major appearance occurs after the Saiyans arrive on Namek, where he seeks the planet’s Dragon Balls to wish for eternal life. The Namekian elder Guru identifies him as exceptionally evil, while Vegeta, formerly his subordinate, describes Frieza as the tyrant responsible for destroying the Saiyan home world. Frieza’s forces also attack Namekian villages during the search.

Frieza’s combat strength is linked to his ability to transform, with each of his known forms controlling his immense power. At first he fights in a compact form, then changes through progressively larger bodies before revealing a final form that appears smaller but is far stronger. On Namek, he battles Vegeta, Krillin, Gohan, and Piccolo, defeating them in succession until Goku arrives. After Goku becomes a Super Saiyan, Frieza survives the planet’s destruction and returns as a cyborg with his father, King Cold. Trunks kills them on Earth. He first forces Goku to become Super Saiyan during combat on Namek.

Years later, Frieza is revived by his soldiers and restored to life with Earth’s Dragon Balls. He trains for the first time, achieving a golden form and returning with an army to retaliate against Goku. His Golden Frieza form gives him enough power to challenge Goku’s Super Saiyan Blue, but limited stamina lets Goku exploit the battle’s turning point. Although Frieza is defeated, he is not permanently removed from the story. In the Tournament of Power, he accepts resurrection as payment for cooperating with Universe 7’s team. He betrays allies, yet helps defeat Jiren and earns revival after the tournament.

Frieza’s defining trait is not simply cruelty but calculated self interest. He treats subordinates as disposable, kills the Namekian villagers, and destroys Planet Vegeta after learning that Saiyans might challenge him. His fear of the Super Saiyan legend motivates both the genocide and his later obsession with eliminating Goku. Yet his encounters expose an unusual discipline: he can suppress his energy, develop new transformations, and fight strategically against stronger opponents. He also possesses a distinctive moral absence, illustrated when he reneges on agreements and attacks enemies who have already surrendered. Across Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super, Frieza remains a recurring antagonist whose returns are tied directly to his ambition, adaptability, and refusal to accept defeat.
