About Protean Raider

Protean Raider, Creature — shapeshifter pirate, designed by Izzy first released in Jan, 2018 in the set Rivals of Ixalan Promos and was printed exactly in 2 different ways.

A deck that focuses on aggressive strategies and frequently attacks would benefit most from including Protean Raider, as it allows for versatile and unexpected plays by copying powerful creatures on the battlefield. While Protean Raider offers flexibility and surprise factor, some may argue that cards like Clone or Clever Impersonator provide similar effects more reliably. However, Protean Raider's potential to mimic any creature on the battlefield makes it a compelling choice for decks looking to adapt to various board states and surprise opponents, making it a viable option for play in certain strategies.

Rules

01/19/18

Any enters-the-battlefield abilities of the copied creature will trigger when Protean Raider enters the battlefield. Any “as [this creature] enters the battlefield” or “[this creature] enters the battlefield with” abilities of the chosen creature will also work.

01/19/18

If the chosen creature is copying something else (for example, if the chosen creature is another Protean Raider), then Protean Raider enters the battlefield as whatever the chosen creature copied.

01/19/18

Protean Raider copies exactly what was printed on the original creature (unless that creature is copying something else or is a token; see below). It doesn’t copy whether that creature is tapped or untapped, whether it has any counters on it or Auras attached to it, or any non-copy effects that have changed its power, toughness, types, color, or so on.

01/19/18

Raid abilities care only that you attacked with a creature. It doesn’t matter how many creatures you attacked with, or which opponent or planeswalker controlled by an opponent those creatures attacked.
