About Dream Eater

Dream Eater, Creature — nightmare sphinx, designed by Daarken first released in Oct, 2018 in the set Guilds of Ravnica and was printed exactly in 3 different ways.

A control or tempo deck that focuses on disrupting the opponent's board state and maintaining card advantage would benefit from including Dream Eater in their deck. While Dream Eater's ability to surveil 4 and bounce a nonland permanent can be powerful, it may not be as efficient as other options available in the format, such as Torrential Gearhulk, which provides a similar effect with a larger body and the potential to cast an instant from the graveyard. Dream Eater could see play in certain metagames or as a budget option, but it may not be a staple in competitive decks.

Rules

10/05/18

Dream Eater’s triggered ability goes on the stack without a target. While that ability is resolving, after you’ve surveilled, the reflexive triggered ability triggers and you pick a target nonland permanent to be returned to its owner’s hand. This is different from effects that say “If you do . . .” in that you choose the target after having surveilled.

When you surveil, you may put all the cards you look at back on top of your library, you may put all of those cards into your graveyard, or you may put some of those cards on top and the rest of them into your graveyard.
