About Counterbalance

Counterbalance, Enchantment, designed by John Zeleznik first released in Jul, 2006 in the set Coldsnap and was printed exactly in 5 different ways.

A control deck that focuses on manipulating its library and maintaining a balance of mana values would benefit from using Counterbalance, as it can disrupt opponents' spells effectively. However, in competitive Magic: The Gathering, cards like Force of Will or Mana Drain are often considered better counterspells due to their flexibility and efficiency. While Counterbalance can be a powerful tool in the right deck, its effectiveness may vary depending on the metagame and overall strategy, so it may not always see play in top-tier competitive decks.

Rules

07/15/06

If an opponent casts a spell with X in its mana cost, the converted mana cost of that spell takes the value of X into account. If you reveal a card with X in its mana cost, X is 0. For example, if your opponent casts Blaze with X=1, Counterbalance will counter that spell if you reveal a card with converted mana cost 2, but it won’t counter that spell if you reveal a Blaze of your own.
